
Nina C. Young (b.1984) is a New York based composer who writes instrumental, mixed, and purely electronic music. Nina’s music has been performed and read in the United States, Canada, France, and the Netherlands by ensembles including the Orkest de ereprijs, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Yarn/Wire, Independent Orchestra and Chamber Players at McGill, EAMA Resident String Quartet, Cameleon Arts Ensemble, UNESCO Fusion Arts Ensemble, MIT Symphony Orchestra, and numerous independent musicians. Awards include a 2010 BMI Student Composer Award, IAWM’s 2011 New Music Competition - Pauline Oliveros Prize for electro-acoustic music, McGill Student Composer-in-Residence program (2009, 2010), and the Philip Loew Memorial Award. She has participated in festivals and conferences including the 17th International Young Composers Meeting, SEAMUS 2011, Domaine Forget’s Nouvelles Rencontres, European American Musical Alliance at the Ecole Normale in Paris, US State Department’s Fusion Arts Exchange, Aspen Summer Music Festival, and Bowdoin Summer Musical Festival.
Nina is currently pursuing doctoral studies in composition at Columbia University where she is currently studying with Fred Lerdahl. In 2011 she earned a Master’s degree in music composition from McGill University, studying with Sean Ferguson. While in Montreal she worked as a research assistant at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT) and as a studio and teaching assistant at the McGill Digital Composition Studios (DCS). Nina completed her undergraduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) receiving degrees in both ocean engineering and music. While at MIT she held a research assistantship at the MIT Media Lab. Her strengths in both music and the sciences has led to research and music compositions that concentrate on merging acoustic and electronic music together.
